Creating space to teach and learn

The success of education is influenced by many factors but it’s clear that environment is a pivotal factor that should be taken into account.  The activities of teaching and learning need to be acknowledged by designers, architects, university administrators and teachers and spaces should be designed to take advantage and maximise the potential of the teaching and learning process.

When we consider where we teach, learn and work we should be aware of the impact of the space that surrounds us has.

We've been working with the 3D department at Plymouth University to improve the studio environment and have introduced changes to the layout and design in order to improve the learning and teaching culture.  The changes were designed to enhance learning by creating flexible, adaptable spaces that support a range of teaching practices. 


As designers we've helped companies improve their working environments through design changes to their space, to create workplaces that improve productivity, efficiency, staff morale and health, reduces waste and ultimately have a positive impact on the financial performance of the business.  

By applying this knowledge and experience and introducing approaches from commercial workspaces to the teaching environment our refurbishment of the design studios echoes trends from industry.

The works draws on academic research and case studies and crucially engaged the students and staff in the process to develop a sense of ownership and collaboration.

We'll be documenting the process and developments and adding other examples of how good design can improve the quality and experience of the learning process with our Design for Education posts.
